JORGE AMADO
AQUELE FORA UM MÊS DE
MÁS NOTÍCIAS. O
DEPUTADO ARTUR CARNEIRO
MACEDO DA ROCHA, descenden‑
garia? Por que se
demorava em Buenos Aires? Nenhuma precisão no
telegrama. Paulo
to e se encontraria,
ele‑
gante no smoking
bem-talhado, um formoso homem ainda, apesar dos
seus cinquenta anos.
Quem lhe daria essa idade? Soubera conservar‑se
jovem e os raros fios
de cabelos brancos emprestavam‑lhe
um certo ar
de distinção que ia
calhar num político da sua responsabilidade. Ajustou
a gravata, agora
portinhola do gran‑
de automóvel negro.
Artur ordenou:
— Vamos à casa do Costa
Vale.
Chovera no princípio da
noite e o automóvel atravessava uma cida‑
de molhada e
semideserta nas ruas silenciosas do bairro elegante.
Através dos vidros,
Artur enxergava os postes elétricos derramando
uma luz baça sobre
gotas d’água no passeio, dando‑lhes
um brilho de
pedra preciosa.
movimento aumentava e a
marcha se fazia lenta. Uma longa fila de
autos atulhava o
viaduto do Anhangabaú, dirigindo‑se
ao Teatro
Municipal. Enquanto
esperava o descongestionamento do trânsito,
Artur leu, quase
do edifício monumental
da Light & Power, o monopólio americano da
energia elétrica:
abaixo o imperialismo ianque! viva o pcb.
enxergar a inscrição subversiva. E ela relembra‑
do Exterior, gordo e
pegajoso diplomata, a propósito do caso de Paulo.
Fora igualmente
nista? Parecia‑lhe ouvir ainda as últimas
palavras pronunciadas, com
uma gravidade quase
solene, pelo revolucionário:
— A culpa caberá
inteiramente aos senhores. Quanto a nós, sabere‑
mos como agir...
Fitando o pavimento
molhado, tentava enxergar, sob a luz derrama‑
da pelos postes, o
rosto moreno e melancólico de Marieta, tantos anos
inutilmente desejado. E
magreza, do homem jovem
que Cícero d’Almeida lhe apresentara sim‑
plesmente como o
camarada João. A testa larga, onde começavam a ra‑

JORGE AMADO
THAT WAS A MONTH OF BAD NEWS. The
MR ARTHUR LAMB MACEDO DA ROCHA, descenden,
you old paulista strain, thought with joy
that in few
hours that fateful October of the
year 1937 would be finished,
Maybe November initiation under better auspices.
Vineyard of change and, when the pockets of
his jacket that he had used
during the afternoon, found the telegram. Once
again re-read
and then threw it on the bed in an angry gesture. After
all when he would come? Why if it took in
Buenos Aires? No accuracy in
telegram. Paul could disembark from a plane at
any moment,
to and would, of course, surrounded
by reporters eager. Did a
effort not to think about the child, in
your next arrival in scandal
the besieged.
Looked at if again in the mirror before
he left, and he met,
Ghent in fitted tuxedo, a
beautiful man, despite the
his 50 years. Who would give that
age? Nasty remained
young and the rare white hairs lend him
a certain air
of distinction that would probably a responsible politician. Set
the tie, now thought of Marieta Vale.
On the street, the driver bowed a little to open
the door of the gran-
black car. Arthur ordered:
— Go to the Costa Vale.
Rain in the night and the car was
crossing a city
of wet and silent streets nearly
deserted of the elegant neighborhood.
Through the glass, Arthur saw electric poles pouring
a dull light on drops of
water on the sidewalk, a brightness of giving you
precious stone. The proportion who were
advancing to the center of the city
increased movement and the March was slow. A long
line of
Autos stuck the Anhangabaú, addressing
to the theatre
Hall. While the decongestion of
traffic,
Arthur read, almost through the wet crystals spelling, the
inscription in
tar unknown hands had traced on the solid walls
the monumental building of Light Power monopoly & American
electricity: below the Yankee imperialism! long
live the pcb.
And again was released on Dim thoughts
of the month October
and their unpleasant memories. The
car marched again,
but Arthur continued to see the subversive registration. And she recalls,
to go interview with the Communist leader, the
accuracy of the words of the
boy, its proposals for Union and dramatic perspective he he
set
If democratic politicians continued "close-eyed
of ". A strange mixture of feelings dominated Arthur to remember
the interview: a certain malice — that
man still Mister, underdressed,
of, left no doubt of the media workers, wanting
to teach politics
— and a certain admiration for severe revolutionary figure.
Thought in another interview he had that
month: with the Minister
from the outside, fat and tacky diplomat, regarding
the case of Paulo.
Out also unpleasant, don't leave either an earliest
memory,
Ça kind. But it was different: the
Minister he had found
owner of the situation at all times, report
to the between
as it seemed. In any case,
very unpleasant.
I would like to think of happy things, to boot-the
memories
that October exasperating. Why not
think in Marieta Vale, which
I was going to review after long months
of absence — the Pearl Necklace Flash
arguably more about the whiteness of your
lap that the drops of water-color
by light — why not think in your
eyes and in your smile,
that in a few moments reunited again a, why grief-if
with the
political gossip with the telegram announcing the
next arrival of
Paulo, with the scandal that secure the
drinking of the boy, with the between-
Vista with the Minister, with the recent
meeting with the leader community,
Communist? Seemed to himhear the last
words pronounced with
a solemn, almost revolutionary gravity:
— The fault will fit entirely to
you. As far as we know,
we will know how to act...
Staring at the floor wet, trying to see, under the
light pours,
of by posts, his face dark and melancholy of Marieta, so
many years
desired unnecessarily. And what I saw was
the face of an extreme lean
thinness, the young man that Cicero d'Almeida had him Yes,
simply as comrade John. The broad
forehead, where began to ra-
rear, hair a deep prying eyes, nervous hands on
contrast with the deep voice and paused as a
teacher.

GMN: As
?

Jorge Amado: “Eu me
falsificação do socialismo ?
a vida. De repente, um mundo vem abaixo!

Jorge Amado: "I lost
my way – and – before, when I found out that
Stalin was not the father of the people, contrary to
what I always thought. That was a painful process, hard, cruel and
time-consuming. Most causes of current events may already be clear
to me. But the events are an immense speed. I had
dinner with Costa Gavras, my friend. We discussed this situation: it's
not just a world that is over. Is everything was life
and the goal of struggle of millions of disabled. It's
people who fought with generosity and courage and was
arrested and tortured by fighting for one thing – suddenly – is
over. The question that I can do now is the following: is the socialism that sucks or is falsification of
socialism? What happens in these countries? Are no longer socialist regimes nor Poland nor Hungary or Czechoslovakia or the eastern Germany. Jao are no
longer the Socialist Bulgaria, Romania and Albania. But
I don't believe that socialism, as idea, sure to be representing as advancement and as a step
forward. There was never any socialism, as there was no democracy. As
the implementation of socialist regimes was based on what is fundamentally
wrong-the class dictatorship – there was, then, a complete and utter forgery.
The world was a before
the October revolution in Russia. After, being another. So-called socialist States – but in
reality – may cease to exist. That doesn't mean, however,
that the new values brought by the October revolution-as a collective
consciousness larger and fraternal – do not persist. Persist. What
happens is that the world will not be even equal. No
longer is it capitalism ... is no longer the same
as before. I'm not a sociologist. Watch it all the time, on
tv, in Brazil, which appeared every day two, three political
scientists. Political scientist to donkey. It's a huge
amount. Are formidable. I'm not a political scientist – unfortunately –
or literary critic. But come to my house people who fought all
his life. Suddenly, a
world comes down!
