A história das Bienais da
Bahia não pode ser contada sem a presença marcante de Juarez Paraíso. O pintor,
gravador, desenhista, professor e crítico foi também o idealizador das duas primeiras
edições do evento, realizadas em Salvador nos anos de 1966 e 1968.

Nascido no município de
Arapiranga em 1934, Juarez veio ainda pequeno para Salvador. Com apenas 14
anos, ingressou na Escola de Belas Artes e, dois anos mais tarde, tornou-se
professor de desenho. Representante da segunda geração de modernistas baianos,
o artista realizou exposições em diferentes locais do Brasil e do exterior,
como Chile, Peru, Espanha e EUA, entre outros.

The story of the Biennials of Bahia cannot be told
without the strong presence of Juarez Paraíso. The painter, engraver, designer,
teacher and critic was also the originator of the first two editions of the
event, held in Salvador in the years 1966 and 1968.
Born in the city of Arapiranga in 1934, Juarez came
still small to Salvador. With only 14 years old, he entered the School of fine
arts and, two years later, he became professor of drawing. Representative of
the second generation of modernists baianos, the artist held exhibitions in
different places of Brazil and abroad, such as Chile, Peru, Spain and USA,
among others.

Um artista inovador e
multifacetado, autor de diversas obras em espaços públicos e privados de
Salvador: Juarez Paraíso é o personagem do mais recente programa “Perfil”,
produzido pela TV UFBA.
Destaque da segunda geração
de modernistas baianos e idealizador da Bienal da Bahia, o professor aposentado
da UFBA Juarez Paraíso seguiu o conselho do pai e se formou em contabilidade, a
fim de garantir um trabalho que lhe trouxesse o sustento - mas nunca exerceu a
atividade. Continuou seguindo o seu instinto de artista, abrindo espaço para a
experimentação e a pesquisa em seu trabalho nas artes plásticas.

An innovative and multifaceted artist, author of
several works on public and private spaces of Salvador: Juarez Paraíso is the
character of the latest program "Profile", produced by TV UFBA.
Highlight a second-generation modernists baianos and
creator of the Bienal da Bahia, the retired professor at UFBA Juarez Paraíso
followed the advice of his father and graduated in accounting, in order to
guarantee a job that brought him the support but never exercised the activity.
Continued following his instinct for artist, opening space for experimentation
and research into his work in the Visual Arts.
